Madame Soudereuse
One aspect of the beauty of working with such a rich and textured past is the ability to re-contextualize prominent historic themes. The word, baroque, comes from the Spanish, barrueco, etymologically a "rough pearl". One of the goals of religious baroque art was to create an overall sense of awe which would speak to the average illiterate individual of the time. Modern sculpture seems to me to be getting more and more obscure, distancing itself from everyman. My furniture, with the baroque intent, reaches out to speak to everyday people with a form that is familiar, yet which is presented in an entirely new and thought-provoking way.

The resurgence of baroque furniture in decorating is often presented within a modern clean space. This contrast amplifies the “simple, obvious, direct, and dramatic” iconography. Madame Soudereuse stands alone within such a space, but she would be equally at home among her peers.
